Setting goals for yourself at the top of each year might be one big trap. This is a trap that I set up for myself year after year! Let’s backtrack a bit. I shouldn’t start off this discussion in a pessimistic way. Personal goal setting always starts with the purest of intentions…at least for me they do. I definitely set the bar pretty high for myself and I am usually not quite meeting what I thought I would, but I honestly would like to change some of that this year.
2025 is kind of a monumental year for me. I will be hitting a milestone age, and I have been feeling some uneasy feelings about it. You know, the usual “is my life where I thought it would be?”, “do I look the age that I am becoming?”, etc. That said, these thoughts have motivated me to set some goals for myself just to provide a sense of accomplishment while I am dealing with meeting this BIG AGE milestone.
So let’s get into it. What does Brit have on her list this year?
- Stop scrolling and start creating. I’m not poud to say this, but I often choose to unwind by doom scrolling on Instagram. If I have had a day full of meetings and spreadsheets, all I want to do is see Instagram posts of clumsy pandas or celebrity gossip. Before you know it, I have been scrolling for 30 minutes when I clearly could have been doing something much more productive and fulfilling. So a part of this goal is obviously continuing this little creative outlet on this blog. There are also a couple other things I want to get out and enjoy. The first is pottery. I have dabbled with this art medium a couple times, but I really would love to dive deeper into it. It is such a therapeautic activity where you are forced to focus on what is in front of you and I have always had a strong interest in it. The other creative space I love is floral design. I was first introduced to this in high school! I took an entire semester of floral design and kind of fell in love with it. I see random workshops advertised fairly often, and I want to sign up for one really soon!
- Dedicated time with my teenager. My oldest son is officially a teenager, and that has really swirled up some emotional moments for me recently. I can’t believe that my little boy is truly a young man. I am seeing that our relationship is changing. He doesn’t need me the same way he did when he was five, and his interests are vastly different as he gets older. Having a much younger child who needs constant attention obviously pulls me away from my oldest more often than not, so I want to be more intentional with the time I spend with him and really keep our connection strong. I am definitely teetering on embarrassing mom territory, but I am willing to keep the mom jokes to a minimum to spend an afternoon with my boy.
- Read more! This goal piggybacks on the first goal in regards to doing something other than scrolling on my phone. I must admit, I have not always been interested in reading as a pastime. In very recent years I have become a junior bookworm, but I don’t always make the time to read as often as I probably could. It is such a nice way to wind down at the end of the day by opening a good book and diving in until your eyes just can’t stay peeled open anymore. I don’t necessarily want to place a number of books on this goal. I just want to simply have my nose in a book more often. I will definitely be sharing what I am reading on my Instagram so watch out for that!
- Get my health in order. It is possible that I just ate a huge slice of pizza right before writing this, but please hear me out! In the past few years, so much has been going on in life that I honestly don’t check in with my body as much as I probably should. I had a physical recently, and the numbers that came back from my blood work could use some improvement. Nothing alarming came up, but the numbers were trending in a direction that over time could become concerning. This is the only body I have so I want it to work well for me for as long as possible. I want to cook better food and move my body more. Less fries, more fruit. Less sitting, more squats. I want this body to look and feel great in this monumenal year!
- Couch to 5k. This might be the most ambitious of all the goals. I am not a runner and never have been. I am not fast, and my endurance doesn’t exist. But I have always wanted to be a runner. I am envious of people that can run 3 miles every morning just to get their day started. There is something about it that really seems to center your mind and give you an endorphine boost that makes your day better. I have seen a few people on Youtube document their couch to 5k journeys and they are really inspiring. I want to give it a good try and hopefully I will reach this goal. Please, please, please join me! We can encourage each other!
2025 is going to be great! I am manifesting it now! What are your goals for the year or just for life in general? Let’s cheer each other on!
Until next time…xo, Brit
